Anthropic suspends access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after a US directive citing national security risks. Implications for AI regulation deepen.

Anthropic has suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 artificial intelligence models following a directive from the U.S. government citing national security concerns. The order, issued late Friday, requires Anthropic to block access for all foreign nationals, regardless of their location. The company said the practical impact has been to disable the models entirely for all users to ensure compliance.

The U.S. government has not disclosed specific details about the perceived security risk. However, Anthropic suggested the directive may be tied to fears of a potential “jailbreak” method that could bypass the models’ built-in safeguards. In a statement, Anthropic defended its systems, claiming that despite extensive testing, no universal exploit had been identified. The company acknowledged the government presented verbal evidence of a narrow, non-universal vulnerability but described it as involving specific tasks like debugging software codebases, rather than a broader security flaw.

This suspension comes amid heightened regulatory scrutiny of advanced AI models. On June 2, President Donald Trump signed an executive order allowing federal agencies to vet “frontier” AI systems for up to 30 days before public release, citing national security risks. Shortly after, the White House issued National Security Presidential Memorandum-11 (NSPM-11) on June 5, directing agencies to tighten oversight of AI systems in sensitive domains, including cybersecurity and autonomous weaponry. These moves underscore the growing perception of advanced AI as a dual-use technology with strategic importance, akin to cyber weapons.

The crackdown on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 may signal a shift in how regulators approach AI governance. By restricting access, the U.S. is treating Anthropic’s models as potential threats if misused or compromised. For market participants, this raises questions about how regulatory actions might affect other AI developers and the broader adoption of generative AI technologies.

Despite this development, the broader AI sector remains resilient. Anthropic’s suspension did not appear to impact market sentiment significantly. As of June 13, the broader token markets saw minimal movement, with the AI sector-linked token trading at $205.19, up 0.18% in the past 24 hours. However, sustained regulatory actions could weigh on valuations if compliance burdens increase or if access to models becomes restricted.

Looking ahead, it will be critical to monitor how the U.S. government enforces NSPM-11 and whether additional AI models face similar scrutiny. Developers operating in the generative AI space should prepare for the possibility of stricter export controls and mandated compliance with evolving cybersecurity standards. Market observers will also be watching closely for any rebound in Anthropic’s operations or further clarity on the alleged vulnerabilities in its systems.
